The Glock Model 30

Phil Davis
 SCRA meeting 10/5/09
November 2009 GunNews

This is a Glock model 30, Glock G-30 subcompact.  Its 10 shots of .45 ACP..  Its lots of bang in a small compact package.  As light as it is and as small and powerful as it is, its still controllable.  It doesn't shoot half bad.  It has a 10-round magazine and what's nice about this particular gun is Glock's full size .45 is the model 21.  The model 21's magazine will fit right in there and stick about that far out.  So you've got a full 13-round capacity.

Some people make fun of Glocks.  Davis has been known to make fun of Glocks.  Davis is not going to say what he said about them because  he will get credit and people will say, "Did you hear what he said about Glocks?"

Glock Model 30Davis never thought he would get into a gun that was made out of narrow black plastic.  He always thought that was better used for other items.  But it works.  Its ugly, its boxy but it works and it works all the time.  Davis has never had a malfunction with this gun.  He has never failed to hit the center of mass with this firearm when he was shooting at a target.  Its very controllable and he has never had a type of ammunition that did not function properly in it.

Glocks are very easy to take apart.  Take the magazine out and always, always, always, check the chamber and dry fire it.  Then grab these little tabs right here and it just comes apart like that!!

Someone asked if Davis could do it blindfolded.  So Davis took off his glasses and remarked, "Do you know how blind I am?" and again demonstrated how easy it was to take apart and put back together with no spare parts.

Spear came out with a specific type of ammunition called the SB (Short Barrel) Model.  Its a .230 grain hollow point and was specifically designed for firearms with a 3-inch or shorter barrel.  They use a faster burning powder so you actually get a reasonable velocity.  You don't have as much velocity loss.  The old adage used to be between 50 and 100 feet per second for every inch of barrel you lost.  Not the case with Spears new gold dot SB.  This is coming out, Davis believes, 950 feet per second out of a short barrel and its not a whole lot of recoil either.

These are durable, reliable and accurate.  If you can't find a Glock that covers what you want to do with it, you're just way too picky.

They got teeny weeny Glocks.  They've got Glocks that are smaller than this and lighter than this.  They've got Glocks with 6 1/2 in barrels.  They've got Glocks with cool little vents in the top that shoot flames out the top.  They've got Glocks that are green and Glocks that are brown. Davis is waiting for them to come out with a Glock that is pink.  Taurus already has come out with a gun that is pink.

You want to be careful with cast bullets and reloads on a Glock.  They do not have a supportive chamber.  What that means is when the round is sitting in there, there is a space right underneath the rim that is not supported.  If you're shooting ammunition that has been reloaded several times  the case starts to get weak near the web you may lose it.  You are also advised not to shoot cast bullets out of a Glock.  If you have one that blows the bottom out of that case while its in the chamber you will know because its kind of like an M-80 going off in your hand plus it barfs the entire contents of your mag well out at high velocity.

The model .30 comes standard with adjustable sights.  Davis' gun has been dehorned; there are no sharp edges up around the front so its easy to holster and unholster.  Some of the larger ones are boxier than that but the ones that are designed for concealed carry, its a pretty small package.  Its roughly the same size package as a 5-shot .38 revolver.   Davis thinks it is about 28 or 29 ounces loaded. That 's about what a model 36 Smith weighs loaded.   But with a small revolver, you've got 5 shots of .38 special; with this Glock, you're looking at 10 shots plus one in the chamber of .45 ACP+P.  This is a real stopper.

Out-of-state carry permit holders:  BEWARE coming to IL!
(Guns Save Life) - GunNews - February 2011 -  So you live in one of the forty-eight states that offer carry permits and you're driving along on an interstate about to enter Illinois.  Before you cross into Illinois, make sure you stop, unload your firearm and encase it in some sort of container, ideally so it's inaccessible.

Failure to do so may result in not only the revocation of your existing carry permit(s), but also in you staying as a guest of the State of Illinois for more than the night at a gray bar hotel.

Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation last summer that mandates one to three years in prison for any non-FOID card holder arrested for possessing a loaded firearm or an uncased, unloaded firearm where ammunition is readily accessible.

As an non-resident of Illinois, you are ineligible for a FOID card.

We don't expect most out-of-state residents are going to know about Illinois' new, pernicious law.

Don't be one of those folks who says "Eh, I'll be okay.  I'm just going to drive through without stopping."

Illinois is a big state and things happen.  You could be part of Illinois' supplemental revenue program, often implemented by our State or local police in the form of speeding tickets.  Accidents also happen as do mechanical breakdowns.

Don't risk a mandatory prison term.  Disarm yourself before coming into Illinois.
