![]() Guns Save Life Guest Speaker, Rob Werner Law Outdoor Range and Gun Company, Class II Manufacturer & Class III Sales Chandlerville, Illinois SCRA Meeting June 5, 2006 July 2006 GunNews Rob said they have been there for five years and a lot of people will come out and have no idea who they are or what they are about. The major problem they have is their name. Rob is in law enforcement and his last name is Werner. The name of their business is Law Outdoor Range and Gun Company. Everyone calls Rob Mr. Law thinking that is his last name. The second bad thing is their logo: a star with "Law" in the middle of it. Rob is the Chief of Police of Chandlerville and everyone thinks his range is open only for police departments. If Rob had to step back five years he would call it Rob's Club House, Lorna's Shooting Range or anything but Law's. They have a marquee in front of the house now that says "Open to the Public" because they had so many people who would drive on by. They tell people they're real easy to find, they're in the middle of nowhere. Really, they're on the Oakford blacktop - Rob is the only guy who has a fifty foot rappel tower. It's easy to see; you can see it in the middle of the night. Rob says they are a Class II manufacturer which allows them to build anything other than destructive devices. So they build semi-automatics as well as full automatics. They rent out the full automatic stuff. When you go to the gun shows and you see all these machine guns and, yes they are real and yes they do work. They do memberships out there and they are a full stocking dealer with Glock, and with numerous other guns. Right now they have a humongous four hundred square foot store and it is packed. They are going to be moving into a four-thousand square foot store and they can hardly wait. Rob has approximately fifteen departments coming out that he certifies and he teaches civilian classes as well. They do an annual party each year and they call it a barbecue and machine gun shoot. They are a smaller version of Knob Creek. They have thirty machine guns and they have anywhere from forty to one-hundred people come out for the day. They tell people to come out and bring a covered dish and have a really good time. This year Rob's wife had a bowling pin shoot; a turkey shoot and they now do a best hand shot poker. She bought a fifty decks of cards and stapled each deck to a target board. Then she stepped everybody up to the seven yard line and said "ready, go!" and you had x amount of seconds and x amount of bullets, usually it was six because they were wheel guns. Whoever shot the best hand won. They are going to try to incorporate that into a daily shoot and start advertising that on their website to try to get more people out there. Rob said he realizes they are thirty-five or forty miles away from some people. Rob said there are three places to his knowledge you can shoot full autos in the State of Illinois: Mega Sport near Joliet, Belleville Indoor Shooting Range in Belleville and Law. Rob said when people call and ask what can they shoot, he tells them if they can get the USS Iowa up there, they can shoot - just don't hit his house. There are no size restrictions. One of their flyers read anything from bb guns to Howitzers. As long as you're safe, come on out and shoot and have a good time. They are all about the shooting sport. Rob has been to the schools several times and everyone knows how the schools are. Guns are evil, terrible. Rob is trying to get the schools to let them get some kids out there and get them involved in it because you go to the gun shows and you look at the people and you look at the people at the meeting tonight and he hates to say it, but there are only a few people younger than Rob and his wife and they are not that old. We're losing to video games so Rob and his wife are trying to get the kids out there to do little leagues to get them to shoot because if we don't we're in trouble. They charge ten dollars to use the range, whether its eight minutes or eight hours. Rob invites folks to come out and have a good time. If you want to bring a picnic lunch fine, if you want to go into town and get something to eat and come back thats fine. They're very laid back about it. One of the things they are looking at doing now is putting in an all weather trap. However, Rob isn't certain how deep in his pocketbook it is going to get. They are strictly self-funded. Memberships are fifty dollars a year. If you want to shoot a hundred times a year no problem, no extra catches or charges. However, Rob does require people who rent his machine guns to buy his ammo for liability reasons. They also do birthdays packages too and price them accordingly. Their store hours are noon to six, Tuesday through Friday, Saturday eight to five. Sundays and Mondays they're closed but Rob said it seems they do even more business on Sundays and Mondays. Rob says if he is home, whether he is mowing grass or raking leaves, he is not going to turn anyone down. lawoutdoorrangeandguns.com Return to SCRA Home Page |
