State Police Director needs to go Jim Butler President SCRA December 2005 GunNews The Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) has taken Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent to task for his divisive claims in favor of restrictions on law-abiding firearm owners and, his attempt to stop the Illinois Legislature from overriding Governor Blagojevich's veto of pro-gun SB2104, SB57 and HB340 bills. Director Trent's claim that his personal, political views represented all of law enforcement was wrong. LEAA's Executive Director James J. Folis said, "Director Trent may speak for his boss, the Governor, but his claim to speak for each and every man and woman in Illinois law enforcement is a preposterous stretch." Folis also noted that at the very same press conference, Director Trent disparages the testimony given under oath in Federal court by experts from the Illinois State Police. "Director Trent pretends to speak for all law enforcement, but he certainly doesn't represent the views of LEAA law enforcement members in Illinois and, apparently not even the sworn testimony of firearms experts from his own department." LEAA's Folis concluded, "The Director's political efforts and unsupported claims at a press conference are about safety alright - the safety of his boss' veto power." When Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent says destroying gun purchase records endangers the lives of law enforcement officers, he is implying that the Illinois State Police is somehow inept when compared to other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, that don't retain gun purchase records anywhere near 90 days. If the firearm found at the scene of a crime was stolen, a check through the firearm purchase database is worthless. The database is nothing but an expensive boondoggle that only serves as a de Facto registration list that some day could be used to disarm honest citizens as Hitler did in WWII. Remember the Jews. Director Trent's opposition to these pro-gun laws, passed by the Illinois Legislature, has never been defended with logic, common sense, or fact. His opposition is political, ideological, and elitist. It shows a basic distrust of the law abiding people he has sworn to serve. It shows a contempt for the basic and fundamental right of every citizen to self-defense. Law-abiding people with firearms have never been a threat to law enforcement or the general public. The Illinois State Police has recently been rocked by a series of scandals which have been exposed by articles in the Springfield based "Illinois Times" newspaper, written by reporter Dusty Rhodes. Maybe it is time for a new Illinois State Police Director. As I See it Index Return to SCRA Home Page |
