Is the Daley Dynasty crumbling? Jim Butler President, SCRA April 2005 GunNews Is the scandal plagued, gun-bigot Windy City Mayor Richard Daley's dynasty finally crumbling? With the feds gathering up records from the 5th floor of City Hall this might be the corruption biggest cleanup that Chicago has seen since Elliott Ness brought down Al Capone's operation in the 1920's. Mayor Daley's reputation has taken a beating for the last two years thanks to the corruption charges leveled against his Bridgeport friends and city workers. The Bridgeport - dominated Hired Truck Program scandal has been going on since Daley's father was Mayor (Chicago Tribune, 2/13/05). Today Chicago taxpayers are facing even higher taxes to pay for the massive fraud and corruption that Daley's friends continue to perpetrate. Mayor Daley has bragged of being a "hands-on" Mayor, so it's not surprising that his endless "I don't know" answers to corruption-related questions sounds weak to residents and federal investigators. Newspaper exposes of fraud and corruption are routine as windy weather in the Windy City and they seem to get worse with each new scandal. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was correct in saying "The buck stops on the fifth floor at City Hall." With new state and local tax hikes and the burgeoning corruption in Chicago, the transportation industries that built Chicago are finding other avenues to transport their goods. The trains, planes and ships that used to carry cargo, people and jobs to and through Chicago are now avoiding the city in increasing numbers. Businesses and residents continue to vote with their feet and pocketbooks, finding better and cheaper places to live and do business. Mayor Daley, in an effort to divert attention from fraud, corruption, crime and high taxes so prevalent in his city, is up to his old tricks promoting Draconian gun control schemes instead of solving the real problems facing Chicago. If gun control worked, Chicago would be the safest city in America, not one of the most violent as in fact, it currently is. One wonders where Daley's old buddy Cook County States Attorney Richard Devine has been through all these scandals. While Devine hasn't found any opportunity to investigate his buddy the Mayor, he hasn't missed a single opportunity to find time to come to Springfield to lobby for infringement of our Second Amendment rights. Why Chicagoans keep voting Daley and Devine back into office is a mystery to me. Perhaps its because so many are dependent on patronage jobs. If it wasn't for his famous father, "Da Mayor" would probably be a third-rate lawyer chasing ambulances through the streets of Chicago to make a living. Chicago residents would do well to ignore the Mayor's anti-gun tripe and instead read John R. Lott, Jr.'s fine book, "More Guns, Less Crime", that documents how firearm ownership saves lives and prevents violent interpersonal crime. The fallacy of Mayor Daley's "gun free" utopia was again recently illustrated when Federal Judge Joan Lefkow's husband and mother were slain execution style in the judge's North side home in Chicago. There was forced entry and both were killed, unable to defend themselves with the most versatile personal defense weapon, thanks to Chicago's gun bans. Any government body that denies law-abiding citizens the use of a firearm to protect themselves or their families should be held liable and that's just what legislation proposed in this year's General Assembly would do. It's about time to let the big dummy taxpayers in Chicago pay compensation to crime victims disarmed by their city's anti-self-defense laws. As I See it Index Return to SCRA Home Page |
