IGOLD - Make Your Voice Heard with THOUSANDS of others

Tom Shafer
SCRA meeting 1/5/09
February 2009 GunNews

Tom Shafer, in addition to talking about IGOLD
and politics, talked about this Sig rifle

Thanks to everyone for coming to the meeting and, in case anyone hasn't heard, Blago got arrested!  A round of applause followed.

I want to talk about the upcoming I-Gold Rally.  I'm going to pass around a photo from last year showing 4 to 5,000 or so people marching down Capitol Avenue to the state Capitol, zero press coverage for an event that big.  The very next day they had six people banging on some kind of bongo drum in the Capitol and it made the front page.

It's coming up March 11 on a Wednesday.  Last year we had it in the Hilton and we outgrew the Hilton immediately.  This year with Obama being elected, there will be a lot more people.  They're going to bus in a lot of people and bring in people by train so they're going to rent the Convention Center.  I have spoken with the City officials.  Capitol avenue is all torn up which will affect the parade route.  The City officials say they are going to be flexible so we are going to be marching right through the center of Springfield with a rolling police roadblock and 5,000 people.  I have talked to Rich Pearson, President of the Illinois State Rifle Association, and he has bought more flags which will make the parade route gorgeous.

It will be a bigger event, Prairie Capitol Convention Center, more people, better bus coordination for the people who don't choose to walk from the convention center to the Capitol, probably a different parade route, more flags, and it's all free.  Please show up.  We're going to do the same Lobby Day where you meet your lawmakers.

Tell your friends, it's a wonderful event,  I can't guarantee the weather but I guarantee that we'll do some good. We'll try to drum up some media.  We're working on a press release for all the state press corp right now. It's a good afternoon to see everybody.  People that you can't see from out of town will be there especially the northern Illinois people from way up by the Chicago suburbs and those environs.

You can be an escort, you can be security, or you can be in charge of the flags.  If you write a good speech, maybe they'll let you give a speech.  There's always work to be done.  They sell t-shirts and they raise money for ISRA because as you know lobbying is expensive.

It looks like from the national press coverage, we're liable to have a different governor on March 11.  The way things are going they could be impeaching on March 11.  Anything is possible.  I don't know their timeline, they don't know their timeline.  It's unprecedented to impeach a sitting governor, we're doing it right now in Illinois.  It's the perfect timing with Obama in the Whitehouse, he'll have been sworn in by then and he will be President. Blago will be under impeachment and Illinois is swirling in corruption.  Blago's got to have a trial, Cellini's got to have trial and the gunowners are still holding up our end.  It's kind of a perfect storm.  It will be fantastic seeing a photo with what we've got to build on.  Everything went to perfection last year.  Big events are nerve racking to put on and they can snap just like that from just the weather like a downpour and parade routes and everything else.  I guarantee if it would have got ugly we would have got media, they would have put us on the front page.  You can tell by getting no media coverage we must have done it perfect last year.

Remember, March 11, Wednesday, Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day.

Show and Tell
Tom Shafer made these comments about a Sig Rifle he brought in to show around:
This is my brother's rifle.  My brother wanted a nice rifle and as you know the AR clone market has just exploded with every kind of maker incuding Smith & Wesson making the AR rifle.  This one takes AR mags and it's gas piston operated so it doesn't really foul the action as bad as the AR does thats just gas operated.

He hasn't sighted it, he's got some backup iron sights at home that he's going to put on it.  This was an expensive rifle, a little less than two grand, but they've got that Trijicon Acog sight and it's a thousand dollars.  You can put an optical sight on your rifle that costs more than your rifle.

As you can see on this rifle here, [without] lights, hand grips, bipods, optical sighting devices, this is what I call naked right now.  Along with magazines and cased ammo and optics you can spend as much for your accessories as you did for your rifle.  On some rifles and pistols I've bought, I've spent more on ammo than I did on the gun.  On something like this you're going to have to practice, you're not going to be good at this.  This is quite a machine.
