Tom Shafer

Tom Shafer speaking at the 8/1/11
SCRA Meeting

September 2011 GunNews

Poor old Rod Blagojevich, our most recent, disgraced, scumbag former governor, will be sentenced on October 6th.  Shafer laughed, saying  he doesn't know how well gun-hating Blago is going to sleep knowing that he will report to federal prison in a couple of months to serve ten years.

Of course Shafer will write to the guy, and give us his address so we all can send him Christmas cards as well.

Speaking of felons, Shafer said he got some mail stamped "business from an inmate, Sangamon County Correctional Facility."

Shafer has a cable access show which airs locally including in the jail.  Shafer chuckled that he has a small, deeply disturbed following in the Sangamon County Jail. "I suppose you could call them a 'captive audience'," he laughed.

An inmate locked up for stabbing his mother to death in a east side trailer park home wrote Tom a six-page letter in tiny print.  In a nutshell, the jailbird cooked dinner incorrectly, his momma slapped him upside the head and he thrust a knife into her chest - and now he wants out.

"Oh my God, I've got to take my address off the end of my cable show."

Shafer wrote him back a courteous letter, two or three paragraphs and said to find a public defender and take any deal they will offer.

Shafer's famous for writing George Ryan.  "I've probably written him two dozen times - the last dozen by postcard as I'm trying to keep my costs down," Shafer laughed.  Shafer said he's sent Ryan stamps and envelopes, but he says the SOB won't give Shafer the satisfaction of sending a reply.

Shafer said you don't need to write Blago right away.  He's not going anywhere for probably ten years or so.

Shafer isn't sure if Blago will write back, but he might, as he'll have a lot of spare time on his hands.

Will Blago get off on appeal?  Shafer doesn't think so.  They've spend a fortune on this case, even trying him twice after the first hung jury.  There is no way that a federal judge is going to overturn all that work by the feds," he said.

Blago and his lawyers also alienated this judge with their antics both in and out of the courtroom.

Don Gwinn talked earlier about Project Gunwalker, Shafer said he's given a heads up to his three Congressmen:  Schock, Shilling and Shimkus, his three S's he calls them, to make sure they know that this Project Gunrunner scandal means a lot to the people of central Illinois.

Even though it happened a long ways away down on the border, this is a serious case because ATF is in our lives all the time as gun people.  It's important that they be held to account when the break the law just as with anyone else in America.
