![]() Trashing Our Constitution and Republic Jim Butler, President, SCRA September 2009 GunNews The United States Constitution and our Republic is falling victim to the deceitful political manipulations of the radical left. The United States has deviated to the left under the "leadership" of President Obama and his socialist allies in Congress. To make matters worse, our court system all the way up to the United States Supreme Court has failed miserably in its duty to protect us from what may finally prove the greatest constitutional crisis in our nation's history. Sadly, our Consitution's march to irrelevance continues without so much as a whimper of protest from the so-called watchdogs in the mainstream media. Our system of checks and balances only works when one political party doesn't control all three branches of government. Obama is set to take control of our courts by appointing hundreds of new federal judges and even one or more Supreme Court justices who share his view that the Constitution is open to interpretation. These judges will effectively ignore the Constitution. Fascism is a system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc. Fascists believe the state should have all power, should derive from the top and citizens and their property are really all just property of the state. Where do you think the people's right to firearms fit in that? Ha! Slaves don't own firearms nor do they have any other rights! Fascists regard ordinary people as no more than animals on their plantations. The Constitution provides several ways for citizens the ability to rein in their government. There's the soap box provided by the First Amendment. There's the ballot box to remove abusive elected officials. And lastly, there is the cartridge box provided by the Second Amendment, specifically added to the Bill of Rights as a final check against government abuse of the people. A firestorm has erupted opposing President Obama's socialist plan for the government takeover of the nations healthcare. This would give government control of a major part of the U.S. economy and many people realize the implications. It would open the door to a vast increase in government power and control that would affect all citizens. Even worse, many politicians including President Obama haven't bothered to read the bill before supporting it. Nancy Pelosi and crew tried to rush the government-run healthcare bill through Congress before the general public could learn what was in it, and the effect it would have on their lives. Government bureaucrats, under the proposed legislation, would be making health decisions, including life or death, for everyday Americans. Those protesting the socialist health plan don't believe the same government bureaucrats that brought you the efficiency of the United States Post Office, the solvency of Social Security, or the compassion of the IRS should be trusted with our healthcare system. We have seen the sad results of England's and Canada's respective national healthcare systems. Our citizens, and their people, deserve better. At the close of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on Sept. 18, 1787, a Mrs. Powel anxiously awaited the results, and as Benjamin Franklin emerged from the long task now finished, asked him directly: "Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" "A republic if you can keep it" responded Franklin. Before it's too late we need to step back from the road to fascism and take back our Republic with strict limitations on government power and strong protection of our rights as individuals. The means to do so were outlined in our Constitution and Bill of Rights which Dr. Franklin and the rest of our Founders risked their very lives to give us. We can do no less to save our heritage for future generations. God bless America. Jim Butler's Commentaries Sangamon County Rifle Association Home Page |
