Obama is using U.N. for Gun Control

Jim Butler, President, SCRA

It looks like President Obama is reverting back to his anti-gun agenda in spite of his campaign promise to support the Second Amendment. As a Senator Barack Obama voted wrong on gun rights issues every chance he had.  He is now under tremendous pressure from the radical anti-gun left to take away our right to keep and bear arms.

You may wonder how he can take on another controversial issue like gun control after being badly beaten up in the battle for Obama Care, which has put his ratings in he toilet.  No problem, he will do it like the radical left has always done; sneak anti-gun bills through Congress - using dirty tricks and secret back-room deals as they did on Obama Care.

The deplorable truth is that there are plenty of Representatives and Senators, from both parties, who would vote to limit our gun rights, but are terrified of being thrown out of office by millions of angry pro-gun voters.

It appears that President Obama has figured out a way to protect these politicians as they vote away American citizens gun rights - forever!

Last year while everybody's attention was on the economy, jobs and health care, President Obama ordered his U.N. Ambassador to vote in favor of continued talks to regulate firearms around the world, including the United States.

The sad truth is that if the United States signs the final version of the arms control treaty, our Congress may be required to enact anti-gun legislation to put America into full compliance with its terms.

Obama's support of the Global Gun Control Treaty would create a clever loophole that Congressmen can hide behind by claiming they have no choice but are being forced to pass gun control laws or face sanctions from the United Nations.  This is especially true of many Senators who really want to pass it because they hate debating the gun issue.  This would allow them to shift the blame to the U.N. telling angry gun owners they have no other choice.

The Global Gun Control Treaty is also a sovereignty issue in that this arms treaty would impose the will of the U.N. over that of the United States.  Moreover, this treaty is ill conceived; it allows dictators and despots to disarm their civilian populations; it prevents America from supporting freedom fighters; and it has the support of rogue nations like Iran.  This would be a dream come true for them as it would help them to disarm their civilian populations as well, and give them a monopoly of force so they could crush any opposition.

During the previous Bush Administration pro-gun U.N. Ambassador John Bolton dramatically stood up for America's Second Amendment rights in opposing any action towards a Global Gun Control Treaty.  Mr. Bolton understood that a U.N. Treaty had the power to destroy the Constitutional right of American gun owners.

When Barack Obama assumed the office of President of the United States he swore an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.  It's time for him to live up to that oath and not abrogate our Constitutional rights in obedience to the United Nations demands.
