![]() Obama's Ongoing Anti-Gun Agenda
by Jim Butler, President, SCRA February 2012 GunNews
Jim Butler, President, SCRA If you think President Obama has given up on his anti-gun agenda, guess again. His push for gun control has been quiet and relentless. He has even bragged about working for it under the radar so to speak. Obama recently signed the 2012 Omnibus bill and the same time signaled that he was just going to ignore two parts of the bill by issuing a "signing statement". For example, one sentence in the 2,100-page spending bill stopped taxpayer money from being used by the National Institute of Health for sham studies designed to make legal gun ownership seem like a public health hazard. In his signing statement, Obama claimed that Congress couldn't put restrictions on funding for the National Institute of Health gun control "studies". Why should the federal government be allowed to use taxpayer dollars to lobby away our constitutional rights? You're right. They shouldn't. Perhaps Obama's most dangerous and longest- lasting legacy to American citizens' right to keep and bear arms will be his appointments of federal court judges. His most visible appointments to the Supreme Court have been staunch gun-control advocates, unafraid of using deception to hide their true position. If elected to a second term, Obama could appoint over half of federal judges serving. You can be sure they will be ideological twins of Justices Kagan and Satomayor. Remember, the Supreme Court is only one vote away from reversing the 5-4 decision that so narrowly struck down the handgun bans in Chicago and the District of Columbia. And two of the Justices who voted to strike down the bans, conservative Antonin Scalia and moderate Anthony Kennedy will be well into their 80's during the next administration. President Obama hasn't really been too aggressive in his desire to legislate our gun rights away, in part because he didn't have the votes in Congress. His Justice Department's "Fast and Furious" program to gin up support for gun control has blown up in his face. What he couldn't accomplish legislatively, he has pursued through regulatory restrictions where ever possible. Internationally, Obama's Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has been hard at work helping the United Nations usurp our own Constitution by becoming a signatory to the U.N. Small Arms Treaty. According to Sen. Rand Paul, would wipe out Americans Second Amendment rights. All in all, I'm not sure our civil rights can afford another four years of the Obama team's assault on our Constitution. It's time for a change in November 2012. Jim Butler's Commentaries Sangamon County Rifle Association Home Page |
